Metal valve stem covers. Cheap, look nice, why not?
I've had a set on for a while and they seemed to be fine. Last night my TPMS indicated my tires were low, which wasn't surprising given the temperature. Easy fix, go get air. Got to QuikTrip and I can't get the covers off . I went home to grab a wrench to get a better grip: still nothing. Eventually I got a couple of them off but one wouldn't fucking budge.
Now I'm at the dealer, late for work, and waiting for them to take my car back and replace the stem. Fortunately it sounds like they can reuse the TPMS, but if they can't I don't even want to know how much it wll cost. Right now they're telling me $75 for parts and labor to replace the stem.
So TLDR don't use these fucking things or you'll be late for work and out $75. At least I get to gawk at a Lime Rock Green C7 convertible...

This shocks me. I have used metal valve covers for years in the worlds worst weather without problems. They also use them on bus tires and those cover a lot of miles. Interesting.

Steel ones are fine, it's the Aluminum ones that bond to the stems.

Holy shit, $75. I just asked the garage yesterday for a price to replace the valve stem on my truck and they said $5.

I knew someone that had these on his Ford F250 and they damaged his valve stems because the damn things weigh too much. I'll be sticking with my stock caps thank you very much.

When I was a service adviser, I'd have customers come in for new tires and the first thing I'd tell them if I saw chrome valve stem caps is that they're going to need all new TPMS sensors. Of course, they thought I was trying to rip them off or something, but I'd have them sign a waiver saying that the shop wasn't responsible for the TPMS sensors that were about to be destroyed upon attempted removal of the chrome valve caps.
Sure enough, soon as they were taken off the TPMS sensors would crumble into thousands of pieces. Sometimes the TPMS could be repaired, but most of the time the whole thing would need replaced.
So yeah, don't put these on your car or truck if you live any place that sees a reasonable amount of moisture, and never, ever, ever put them on your car if you live where there is road salt.

"Right now they're telling me $75 for parts and labor to replace the stem."
Are they taking the wee-wee? $75 for a valve stem?!

Steel ones will be fine.
Aluminum ones are a no go.

That does seem like a lot.

Yeah I have steel ones I think. I have never even had to try hard to get them off. This is something that never would have occurred to me.

Yes, and New Jersey 'does seem like' it has more orange faces than Oompa Loompa Land...

It's a dealer, what do you expect? I just want it to get done, they are close to me and open early

That's exactly what Chem 101 is. Even at a college level.

I know, I should have known better. I shut off the engineer parts of my brain when browsing Amazon

Is "does seem like" grammatically incorrect?

No, not that I'm aware of. I was pointing out that it was something of an understatement.

Oh. Jokes are way over my head in the morning. Hahaha sorry.

Well, also I don't have TPMS, so that probably accounts for a lot of it. Still, 1,500% more expensive.

I use metal ones, mostly because they match my truck colour, never had a problem.

Maybe for the labor time. It was mostly labor, then $10 for the part
